APT PREPARATORY ACTIVITIES FOR WTSA-2004(World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly 2004)

 

The WTSA, which takes place every four years, defines general policy for the Sector, establishes the study groups and approves their work programme for each study period of four years, appoints the study group Chairmen and Vice-Chairmen, is the key international event on telecommunication standardization.  Apart from above other important issues to be discussed and resolved at the next WTSA are ITU-T working methods and the Study Group Structure, Strategic Standardization Issues, Standardization needs of developing countries, Regulatory issues related to Standardization and the specific requirements of developing countries.  The WTSA is convened by the Telecommunication Standardization Bureau (TSB) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to consider specific matters related to telecommunication standardization.

 

The APT submitted 9 Common Proposals to WTSA-2004. These focused on issues of organisation of the ITU-T, its working methods and work programme, developing country issues, and telecommunications services and tariff issues.

Background

The 7th ASTAP Forum established four correspondence groups to assist regional preparations for the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-2004), to be held from 5 to 14 October 2004 at the Florianópolis Convention Center, Av. CONTRIBUTION TO ITU-T/TSAG MEETING

Further to the decisions reached at the 1st Preparatory Meeting for World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly 2004 WTSA-2004 held in Melbourne, Australia in March 2004, an APT Omnibus Paper outlining Asia-Pacific regional common proposals and positions to WTSA04 has been developed. The Omnibus Paper is to be submitted to the Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group (TSAG) meeting being held in Geneva, Switzerland from 12 to 16 July 2004.
