SOUTH ASIAN TELECOMMUNICATIONS REGULATORS' COUNCIL (SATRC)

BACKGROUND

The First Meeting of the ITU Regulatory Forum for South Asian countries was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 1995.

The proposal for the establishment of a South Asian Regulators' Council and its proposed Terms of Reference were discussed during the ITU Regulatory Forum for South Asian countries held in Male, Maldives from 8-9 October, 1996. It was suggested that the Regulators' Council should function under the auspices of the APT. There was unanimous agreement among the members about the need to form the South Asian Telecommunication Regulators' Council. However, the members felt that they needed to consult their respective governments for formal approval of the proposal for the establishment of a South Asian Telecommunication Regulators' Council.

By the Third Meeting of the South Asian Regulatory Forum in Kathmandu, Nepal from 21-22 May, 1997, Bangladesh, Bhutan, and Nepal had sent in their endorsement. Following this, Iran, India, and Sri Lanka have also sent in their endorsement, while Pakistan has submitted the proposal to the Government for approval. The meeting decided that the South Asian Regulators Council would work under the auspices of the APT.

Members of the South Asian Telecommunications Regulators' Council (SATRC) consist of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Iran, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
