Under the strategic vision of the APT for the period 2003-2005, assisting its Members to accelerate a qualitative and sustainable growth of telecommunication and ICT services in the Asia Pacific region, APT adopt ICT as one of its trust. This followed by the rapid rise in ICT applications has greatly enhanced the user demand for broadband ICT and Telecommunications infrastructure for various services and other internet based emerging applications. APT also hosted the APT Ministerial Conference on Broadband and ICT Development last 1-2 July 2004 in Bangkok, Thailand. The Broadband Summit was attended by Ministers in the region responsible for Informations, and Communications from the Member countries adopted the Bangkok Agenda. The pillars of the Summit also reaffirm APT’s commitment to WSIS Geneva 2003 Declaration of Principles and Plan of Action. APT ICT Programme is composed of the following two components: The APT has been conducting Meetings on various topics in the field of ICT for the sake of information sharing and coordination of views in the Asia-Pacific region. Topics are selected based on the requests from the APT Members and the request of the host countries. APT Meetings are called “Conference”, “Forum”, “Meeting”, “Workshop”, “Seminar” or “Symposium”, reflecting the purposes of the meetings. Among these meetings, the Ministerial Conference on Broadband and ICT Development is being considered as the most important in the sense that it has adopted the “Bangkok Agenda”, which provided the direction to APT towards enhancing Broadband and ICT Development in the Asia-Pacific region. The “Asia-Pacific Telecommunication and ICT Development Forum” is expected to be held annually to review the activities of the APT in ICT fields and to discuss some hot issues on the development among APT Members. Meetings held in 2004: Asia Pacific Meeting on WSIS Implementation and Preparation for APT Ministerial Conference (March 29-31, 2004 - Thailand) Asia-Pacific Telecommunication Development Forum (June 28-29, 2004 - Thailand) APT Ministerial Conference on Broadband and ICT Development (July 1-2, 2004 -Thailand) Regional Meeting on ICT for the Pacific( August 24-27 - Fiji) Meetings held in 2005: APT-ITU Joint Meeting on the Role of ICT For Disaster Reduction (February 28, 2005 - Thailand) Workshop on Wireless Technology toward Broadband Society (March 15, 2005 - Indonesia) Workshop on Broadband Wireless Technologies toward Information Society (March 18, 2005 - Philippines) Asia-Pacific Telecommunication and ICT Development Forum (July 18-21, 2005 - India) Seminar on ICT Technologies and Broadband Applications (August 3-5, 2005- Thailand) Meetings held in 2006: Symposium on Telecommunications for Disaster Relief (TDR) (April 18-20, 2006- Pakistan) Meetings held in 2007: ICT Development Programme for Supporting ICT Pilot Projects in Rural Areas The objective of the “ICT Development Programme for Supporting ICT pilot Projects in Rural Areas” is to narrow the digital divide in the Asia-Pacific region by establishing pilot projects to ensure the access to ICT in rural areas of APT Member countries and to promote and develop ICT and Broadband development in the region.
