APT 2nd Meeting on Asia-Pacific Initiatives for the Information Society (AIIS)

AIIS or A sia-Pacific I nitiatives for the I nformation S ociety is the evolution of the former APT A sia-Pacific I nformation I nfrastructure ( AII ) due to the changing environment and present development of the Information and Communication Technology and Telecommunication ( ICT ) in the region. The AII was established in 1995 to promote and facilitate the development of telecommunication, information and communication  infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region. After six years of implementation and continuously achieving its objectives in promoting the development of the region's telecommunications new services and applications, information infrastructure policy, network development, technology transfer and improvement of technological level of human resources and adopting pilot projects, the 24th Management Committee agreed to  further use the AII Meeting in achieving the same objectives and changed its name to AIIS.

The Asia Pacific Telecommunity organized the1st Meeting on Asia Pacific Initiatives for the Information Society in Chiang Mai, Thailand from 16 - 19 October 2001. The meeting was organized and held as follow-up activity of the Asia-Pacific Summit on the Information Society held from 31 October to 2 November 2000 in Japan. The objectives of the meeting are to discuss the implementation status of the Tokyo Declaration and Action Plan for bridging the digital divide in the Asia-Pacific region and identify further specific actions to be taken. Members were also expected to discuss their on-going initiatives, Pilot Project proposals and APT future AIIS activities. Prominent speakers from the ICT industry in the region discussed the issues that will enhance the promotion, development and implementation of members' plans of building their ICT infrastructure. The 2nd M e eting may follow the same objectives and a follow-up of the 1st AIIS Meeting recommendation. The preparation for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS-03)  will also takes place.
