25-26 August 2003, Bangkok, Thailand

We would like to inform you that the APT-ITU Joint Workshops on ENUM and IDN will now be held at the APT Conference Hall, Bangkok, Thailand from 25 to 26 August 2003.

The convergence of the Public Switched Telephone Networks (PTSN) and IP-based networks has created opportunities for a host of services bridging the two.  Electronic NUMbering or sometimes called Enhancement of NUmbering and naMing or tElephone NUmbering Mapping and commonly known as ENUM is a mechanism or a protocol that links traditional E.164 telephone numbers with Internet Protocol (IP) addresses.

 The Internet Domain Name System (DNS) which is an essential part of the Internet infrastructure on which Internet mail and web addresses are based, currently use Latin characters.  While Internet content such as web pages have been Internationalized and made available in many languages, there have been a number of recent initiatives to similarly internationalize the Internet's domain name system.  The regulatory aspects of both ENUM and IDN are a hot topic among the policy makers and regulators today.

Recognising the importance of the two issues, the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) is organizing a Workshop on ENUM and IDN jointly with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) from 25 to 26 August 2003 at the APT Conference Hall, Bangkok, Thailand for the benefit of our members.

The Workshop is supported by ITU and the experts on these subjects from ITU, IETF and the industry will speak at the Workshop.   The objectives of the Workshop are:

            ·         To create an awareness and a wider understanding on ENUM & IDN issues;

·         To review the current status in the Asia Pacific region;

·         To review the global implementation of ENUM;

·         To assess the Asia Pacific needs and readiness for the implementation of ENUM;

·         To discuss the management of Internet domain names - Multilingual or Homogeneous?

·         To promote the government private sector partnership

·         To review technical and interoperability issues;

·         To agree upon future direction
