Sub-regional Meeting on Network Development for the Pacific

The Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) organized the “Sub-Regional Meeting on Network Development for the Pacific” in Nadi, Fiji from 29 to 31 January 2008, in collaboration with the Pacific Island Telecommunications Association (PITA). The meeting was supported by Extra Budgetary Contributions from Japan to the APT.

The purpose of this meeting was to follow up from the productive outcomes of the “Telecommunications ICT Policy and Regulation Meeting for the Pacific” held in Auckland from 28 to 30 August 2007.

The APT and PITA see value in promoting further debate on key issues related to network development for Pacific Island countries. In the above-mentioned Auckland meeting, network development was identified as a priority issue for Pacific Island countries. Network development viability is seen as a key consideration when it comes to developing Pacific Island country infrastructure. Rural communities need to be reached to give them the benefits of ICT, and there is an urgent need to provide more bandwidth to the remote islands. Through this meeting we wish to facilitate achieving these objectives.
